New Poets Cafe Program 01/13

Just a quick note.  A new Poets Café program will air tomorrow with me interviewing the talented Alba Cruz-Hacker. The author of No Honey for Wild Beasts, she also teaches poetry in the MFA program at UC-Riverside.

The program will air at 2pm on KPFK, 90.7 FM in Los Angeles. You can also listen via the internet at kpfk.org at the time of broadcast.  And if you miss it, just go to the station's archives on the website. It will be posted there for a limited time.

Von Mizener also serves as a Moreno Valley arts commissioner and is organizing an event to be held at March Field Air Museum on March 20, 2010.


In addition to the broadcast, the Poets Café program can be heard via internet at kpfk.org, at the time of broadcast.  It can also be heard through the station’s show archives after the broadcast.

MoVal Poets on Radio October 14th

Moreno Valley poet Eric von Mizener starts as host of KPFK’s Poets Café program this Wednesday, October 14^th.  Airing at 12:30 pm on 90.7 FM, von Mizener will be heard interviewing other poets from the Inland Empire.

Guests from the IE will be Mary Copeland, Mike Cluff and Brandy Burrows.  Copeland, an instructor at San Bernardino Valley College, also hails from Moreno Valley.  Cluff teaches at Riverside City College, Norco Campus while Burrows has built a local following through her readings and chapbooks.

Von Mizener also serves as a Moreno Valley arts commissioner and is organizing an event to be held at March Field Air Museum on March 20, 2010.

Artober Fest - Call for Artists

This just floated into my inbox from the MoVal Parks and Community Services Department.  Good news for local artists:

Arts Commission Seeks Local Artists for Artober Fest

The City of Moreno Valley’s Arts Commission will host its second Artober Fest on Saturday, October 3, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Moreno Valley Conference and Recreation Center located at 14075 Frederick Street.

Artober Fest will feature the work of local artists displaying photography, painting, sculpture and much more.  Food will be available for purchase and attendees will enjoy musical performances, poetry, and the arts.

The Arts Commission is looking for local artists to set up booths to display their work. There is a $10 fee charged, and each artist will need to register with the City of Moreno Valley to get a business license (no cost for this one-time license). Call 951.347.4555 to sign up to be an exhibitor. 

Artober Fest is a fun-filled way to celebrate the arts with family and friends.  Applications for Artober Fest vendors and a City business license are available on the City’s Web site at www.moval.org.  For more information contact the Parks and Community Services Department at 951.413.3280.  

Poetry at the TAG Pics

I took a few pictures Thursday evening at the TAG Gallery with my cell phone.  They’re a little blurry – I should know better than to try the zoom – but it will give you an idea of how much fun we had.

In one we see Patricia Cherin being serious with a piece.  And in the other?  Well, that’s Gerald Locklin singing opera.  He also did some tap dancing.  All as part of his poetry reading.  It was great.

Poetry Reading Tonight in the Mall

With this first post, I get to announce that tonight, at the TAG Gallery in the Moreno Valley Mall, is what may be the last of the TAG Poetry Readings. But if we are to say farewell to the Gallery, we couldn’t do it in better style.

Tonight’s featured poets are Gerald Locklin and Patricia Cherin. Gerry is a living legend. A long-time member of the Cal State Long Beach faculty, his work is already being archived, and is the subject of many papers. Tricia heads the Master of Humanities program at Cal State Dominguez Hills and has just published a delightful book, Journey In Flagrante.

It was also my pleasure to interview both poets at KPFK-FM this weekend as host of The Poets Café program. (I’ll post here and in the calendar when I find out the air time for the shows.) They are both as entertaining live (if not even more so) than they are on the page, so you’re certain to have a good time.

Also, it will be nice to celebrate the TAG Gallery, and the marvelous work of Laurie Phillips, Sunny Klann and the people of TAG (The Arts Group) over the past year.

The reading is at 6:30 pm, and open readers are invited. (A three poem / five minute limit applies.)

You will find the TAG Gallery on the lower level of the mall, directly across from Sears, next to Anna’s Linens. You will also see the work of local artists on display.

Keep checking back as the blog grows. News and conversation about the Moreno Valley arts scene is only going to become more exciting.

Plus, I’ll be adding a calendar at the bottom. It will be a one-stop shop to find out the when and where of the arts in town.
